What Are You Actually Selling?

You can now hand a client a first draft of almost anything in under ten minutes. Not because you got smarter. Because you opened ChatGPT.

Your client knows this. They’re starting to ask why the invoice looks the same as it did three years ago.

Most people in your position don’t have a good answer to that yet. Some are ignoring the question.

AI didn’t make expertise worthless. It made the output cheap. Getting the right information used to take years of training. Building something usable used to be expensive. A client with patience and a decent prompt now gets something workable in minutes.

What clients were actually paying for?

Not the output. They were paying because they didn’t trust themselves to navigate the system alone. They wanted someone accountable. Someone who knows how things work specifically, not generally. Someone who calls when something changes and their situation is affected. Someone who tells them honestly when they’re about to make a mistake, rather than producing a clean version of it.

A lot of people in professional services have been charging for expertise while delivering relationships. That worked when producing the output was hard. Now it isn’t. The gap between what you think you’re worth & what the client is actually paying for is visible in a way it wasn’t before.

You won’t lose clients to AI. You’ll lose them because you built your value on knowing things and building things faster than someone without training. That gap is gone.

What doesn’t go away.

The ones still standing have taste. They know what good looks like before the client does. They catch the result that’s technically correct but practically wrong. They know what to push back on and when.

That’s not something a prompt produces.

One question worth sitting with: if a client could get the output for free, would they still call you?

If yes, you know what you’re selling. If you hesitated, that’s your answer.
